Join us to #SayYesToDyslexia – we’ve created a filmed showcase of dyslexic talent, launched during Dyslexia Awareness Week in October 2016, have an ultimate vision of creating a toolkit for educators and business owners alike, to inspire them and change their perception of pupils and team members who have the gift of dyslexia.
We’re a growing group of people who work within charity, tech and education and include the Novacroft Group, British Dyslexia Association, Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce, University of Northampton, BBC Radio Northampton, CPD Bytes and University College London. We first got together in 2016 to talk about how we can create an army of like-minded people who will challenge the norm and celebrate the positive differences in dyslexia.
It’s clear from our discussions that, within both education and the workplace, perceptions and attitudes are woefully outdated and, in some cases, extremely damaging to those who might have spent life marginalised by the rest of society. We’re committed to improving the perception of dyslexia, enabling success and celebrating achievements. But we cannot do this alone. Debra Charles, Novacroft’s Founder and CEO, who is spearheading the Dyslexia Roundtable, says: I’m one of the estimated 20% of dyslexic entrepreneurs in the UK, and it took me a long time to realise that the perceived barriers of dyslexia were barriers that I put in my own way, and that the strength to overcome them came from me, from valuing myself and my own ideas. I honestly believe that my success is because of, not despite, dyslexia. That’s why I’m passionate about celebrating and valuing differences, and why perceptions of ‘normal’ need to change. Working together, we can make a difference.
We created a filmed showcase of dyslexic talent, which we launched during Dyslexia Awareness Week in October 2016. We appealed for your success stories, celebrating the achievements of people with dyslexia, showing what a positive card it can be, and received some amazing contributions. Our vision is to create a toolkit for educators and business owners alike, to inspire them and change their perception of pupils and team members who have the gift of dyslexia.
Upload your own talent story!
Send us a short film showing your dyslexia success story. Although we’ve created one film already (you can see it below), we’re still keen to capture energy, enthusiasm and inspiration – everything we receive can help contribute to our toolkit. We’re big fans of innovation! Films could show you talking about your success, speaking about the advantages dyslexia has brought you, or they might show you doing what you love, describing it or creating it, telling how it hasn’t held you back. Or simply tell us your name and what the gift of dyslexia means to you in one sentence. Films can be as long or short as you like, but should be smaller than 256M, and don’t need to be professional standard – they can simply be a ‘selfie’ style video taken on your smartphone.
You can submit films via the link below, via our Facebook page or share your film (or a link to it) with us by emailing it to getmore@uk.novacroft.com
We also have a collaboration group on LinkedIn – join the discussion!
